Candidate Background

What makes me different as a candidate? I am not a career politician. I see myself as an ordinary community minded citizen who is in sympathy with the feelings of all the Hamiltonians.  Like so many, I am looking for change.

What’s wrong with Hamilton?

Decisions from City Hall seem to be for the short term with narrow visions. Decisions are made, revoked and made again with the result that the council is running around in circles while it appears that something is being done.

Our ‘ME FIRST’ ward system is why we are having problems at City Hall.  It is ward against ward and City against suburbs. We need intellectual, intelligent, civic minded, far seeing civic leaders who are willing to place politics way down on the list of considerations when making a decision and choose long term results and stability.

After 10 years living in Hamilton, and monitoring the various aspects of the workings of this City, I have three premises from which to create prosperity for our City:

(1) Within our City we have great resources that are underused.

(2) For change to happen, we must change the way we do things.

(3) Government grants, subsidies and special funds must be used to support new industries that will survive on their own.

My ten suggestions for a fiscally responsible City of Hamilton, {! B% Y7 i+ U/ l( X

1.    Balance the field of agriculture and industry
: n9 p; V2 s( d7 N: @$ Q
We have plenty of dedicated industrial land and we must ensure that the agricultural land within our boundaries remains for agricultural purposes.  Diversification is essential to make an optimum use of these agricultural lands.

2.    Balance the fields of private sector and public sector ! c3 o; D8 @+ c: w& u4 G

We have a well functioning public sector and we must balance it by supporting it with a flourishing private sector made of small and medium enterprises.

3.    Balance the City as a whole with long term planning while giving consideration to the immediate interests of the respective wards9 }# n+ y) S/ W* I0 M' e

Day to day concerns arising within the respective wards must be addressed but the solutions must keep the long-term interest of the City as whole in the forefront.

4.    Balance the independence of the City’s finances and the funding from Federal and Provincial
9 _& o3 T8 K. m9 W( O

The City must become financially self sufficient and not be so dependent on higher levels of government to balance its running budget.  Provincial and federal funds should be required only for special projects and then be used as seed money for new enterprises that will eventually contribute to the finances of the City.

5.    Balance the main stream of the population with the newcomers ! j/ M- N8 \5 S+ ]- B4 B

We must make a concerted effort to integrate newcomers into the mainstream of the City.  A large percentage of the newcomers to Hamilton are well educated professional people.  Learning English is essential but could be done in tandem with integration of the newcomers using the skills they brought with them.

6.    Balance the downtown and the suburbs and the rural areas

We must strive to make the most of what we have at the moment, i.e. the downtown should be a mix of high density residential and commerce, the areas allotted to suburbs should remain as they are and the rural areas should become as efficient as possible for the production of agricultural harvest.

7.    Balance public transit, motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians 7 R- j/ ?. Y# e; U( l! v

The efficiency of the HSR must be improved before any thought is given to LRT.  The population is looking for healthier means of moving around so interconnecting bicycle paths must be implemented and walking trails through the City must also be considered.

8.    Balance domestic economy and international involvement3 X- i9 f$ q2 ]$ X) u3 K9 q0 }$ e+ \

We have many natural attractions for visitors:  the RBG, the many falls, the harbor, the bio diversity of the Niagara Escarpment.  Let’s develop a strong tourist point of interest for the area.  Tourism can lead to international investments in our area and we could foster exchanges with other countries.

9.    Balance the relationship between good public administrative skills and Self-Service of municipal politicians

There is an essential requirement to have excellent public administrators with long term vision who do not lose sight of the long term requirements of the City. Ward councilors must be willing to combine the needs of the City as a whole and the needs of their ward citizens.

10. Balance economic development and environmental protection7 W: D- B! m( G. s

Any new development must take into account the very real concerns about the environment.  Therefore, any new or renovation project must show how it uses available technology to help protect our air and water.  Although it is sometimes more expensive at the start, it will provide economies in the long run.

Mr. Jackson has represented the ward for many years. He did his best and we all appreciate his contributions. Today, this City has a craving for change. I am fully prepared to serve on council. I have the time, the energy and the passion to do it.  So, here I am!

My long term project is to strive for fiscal responsibility and work with a balanced budget. We need leadership with a vision, a long term vision. I can bring long term vision to council and tenaCity in dealing with serious problems.

I oppose rezoning agricultural land to commercial land.  My policy is to retain as much farmland as possible, and halt unregulated growth of urban encroachment.  Systematic new construction over farmland is very costly requiring an extension of the infrastructure of the City and is very costly without bringing in enough revenues to counter balance the cost within a reasonable period of time.

I do not agree that LRT will bring Hamilton any benefits.  We are not using the existing HSR facilities efficiently and adding LRT without first improving the efficiency of what we have now is throwing good money after bad.
